Mise en scene
On this front cover it had a very large picture of Robert Downie Jr who is a famous actor and is the star of Sherlock Holmes. This is the film that the magazine is trying to promote. You can tell because he is dressed up in old fashioned clothes such as a waist coat and the background is of London with Big Ben to his right. The fact that it is a bit gloomy shows that the film has a hint of mystery and suspense in it. It could also show what time the film is set e.g. winter because the background is light blue which portrays coldness. Also it shows exclusives and previews of what's inside the magazine which is the most important thing on the front cover of the magazine apart from the photo. The fact that the picture on the front cover is big makes it eye catching and appealing to potential buyers and fans of the actor.
Title
The magazine title is TOTAL FILM. The reader can identify this straight away because it is in bold white letters and is very large. The white lettering on a dark background makes it seem that the lettering just jumps out the page so it is very noticeable to people looking for that certain magazine. The word total has been engraved into the word film to make it unique. This also makes it look more professional because otherwise there would be to much white writing on the page. As well as it looking professional it also adds effect to the word TOTAL because it makes it stand out so much more. This title is partially blocked by Robert Downey Jr which makes the audience concentrate on who is in the magazine more than what the title is. This could also help the magazine because it could lead the potential buyers to look at the picture and then see that it leads to the title of the magazine so will make them look at it. This is the same for the free giveaway at the top because this will attract people to see the giveaway if they look at the magazine title or vice versa. Both of these could help bring in lots of customers.
Extras
The extras on this magazine front cover make the potential buyers want to pick it up and have a read of the magazine. This is because they used words such as 'SNEAKY!' and 'BASTERDS!' to draw people into the story behind those words. They offer lots of stories about directors and practitioners as well as and exclusive on up coming films such as 'The Fantastic Ms Fox.' The main thing that draws peoples attention to a magazine is reviews of recent films. At the top of the page it says that they review the top 10 films being made right now which will make people want to read it to see if they are worth seeing. This becomes clear to readers by the bright pictures that are linked to it at the top of the page which will catch any ones eye whilst browsing. These films also relate to the target audience of people who buy these magazines because the pictures of films being reviewed are aged at teenagers not the elder generation or really young children.
Lettering
The lettering in this magazine front cover are in a font that makes the writing look old and victorian. This shows when the film was set and that this magazine front cover has been set up to only promote this film. The fact that the lettering that is enlarged on the side of the page to promote other stories is in blue which help it stand out a lot more than if it was black because that wouldnt draw the attention of anyone looking at the cover. The colour blue is a very good choice because it gives off and early morning and eerie feel to the film which is what the editior wanted. Obviously the most important part of this magazine is the title of the film which needs to be in bold otherwise people wont know what film this is promoting. Sherlock Holmes is the largest thing on the magazine and is written in bold to make it as eye catching as possible to browsers. The colours white and blue are used here because they are a reoccuring theme on this page and the editior wants a constant flow to it to make the film seem mysterious because the background shot is in a blue mist as well.
